Ultrasound Detects Ear Infections

Ultrasound Detects Ear Infections
Sep-06-19
A new ultrasound transducer gives ear inspecting devices a boost to identify middle ear infections more quickly and with greater accuracy.

The ultrasound transducer created by a team from Fraunhofer is meant to be integrated into conventional otoscopes. While the device will still allow physicians to perform a visual inspection of the ear, it will also deliver pulses of ultrasound that are reflected off the eardrum and analyzed by an onboard microprocessor. That data is then used to determine the presence of fluid in the ear and the severity of the infection—reducing the need for potentially unnecessary antibiotics.
