Underwater Microscope Offers a New View of Tiny Sea Life

Underwater Microscope Offers a New View of Tiny Sea Life
Jul-13-16
The Benthic Underwater Microscope offers a never-before-seen view of microscopic life in action on the ocean floor.

The Benthic Underwater Microscope (BUM) had to overcome a few significant challenges before making its way into the ocean, such as constant motion and proper lighting. The device is made up of two main components, a housing that holds the camera, lights and lens, and one that contains the computer controls, diver interface and data storage. The camera can be placed on a tripod over the subjects, while the computer component rests on the sea floor, allowing researchers to observe individual corals and other tiny organisms in their natural environment.
