Urine Test Detects Organ Rejection

Urine Test Detects Organ Rejection
Feb-25-19
A urine test able to detect organ rejects in the early stages could reduce the need for biopsies and help save lives.

The test, developed by researchers from Georgia Tech, relies on the team’s special developed nanoparticle made up of an iron oxide core surrounded by dextran and polyethylene glycol and topped with bristles of amino acids. After the nanoparticles are injected into the body, they will gather in the tissue of implanted organs. When the organs begin to struggle, the nanoparticles will release fluorescent molecules that can be detected in urine, allowing for a quick and easy early warning of impending rejection.
