Vacuum Device Reduces Scarring

Vacuum Device Reduces Scarring
Mar-11-19
A new device minimizes scarring by applying suction to help surgeons cut along the grain.

Like most materials, the human skin is made up of fibers aligned in a way that creates tension lines—and an incision cut along these lines will result in the least scarring. To help surgeons better ascertain these lines, the team from Binghamton University developed a vacuum pump that will painlessly stress an area of the patient’s skin. That area is then scanned by a thermal camera to detect the distortions that signal the fibers’ direction, with the data delivered to the surgeon in a matter of seconds.
