Unlike current portable heart monitors, the AliveCor Heart Monitor is not integrated into a smartphone or smartphone case. Instead, the pocket-sized sensor is embedded in a plate that can be attached to the back of a mobile device or case. The monitor communicates with the smartphone via ultrasound picked up by the phone’s microphone and does not require Bluetooth—which makes it more energy efficient, consuming only ten percent of the power used by Bluetooth enabled devices.

Because the Heart Monitor can be used with lower-cost Android phones, it could be particularly useful in developing countries.
