A video camera able to monitor a person’s heartbeat by skin color could have applications ranging from baby monitors to exercise equipment.
Developed by a team from Utah State University, the camera-based system relies on the fact that the blood’s hemoglobin has a peak absorption for green light. As the blood is forced by the heart into arteries near the skin, the system monitors the minute changes in the skin’s color as the heart beats. That data is then analyzed by software that creates an average reading of the color data anywhere the skin is visible.
The startup Photorithm Inc. hopes to bring the technology into commercial production.
