An innovative virtual biopsy replaces the scalpel with sound waves to detect skin tumors non-invasively.
Developed by a team from Rutgers, the virtual biopsy device relies on vibrational optical coherence tomography (VOCT) to create a 3D map of the lesion’s width and depth using a laser diode. Soundwaves are also used to determine the stiffness and density of the lesion, as cancer cells are firmer than healthy cells. The entire procedure takes only about fifteen minutes, and is completely painless.
