Virtual Keyboard Reads Table Taps

Virtual Keyboard Reads Table Taps
Nov-13-12
The Vibratim Virtual Keyboard takes advantage of the the accelerometer in the iPhone to turn a piece of paper into a virtual keyboard.

Designed by Florian Kraeutli, the concept system uses the iPhone’s three-dimensional accelerometer to measure the vibrations of taps on a table, which correspond to the “keys” on the paper keyboard design. The system must be trained to recognize the different strengths and frequency of the taps, which it can then convert to key presses. Currently the system is about 80 percent accurate, and the data is sent to an auto-correct dictionary to help ensure accurate spelling.

Once the system is trained, touch typists can even use the system without the keyboard paper by tapping directly on the wooden table.
