A new navigation system for ground-based delivery robots relies on visual cues to help them find the front door.
Developed by MIT to help improve autonomous last-mile delivery, the system offers an alternative to pre-loading the delivery robot with a map that includes every building’s details—a monumental task. Rather, the system relies on visual cues such as the driveway, door and garage to work out how to get to the front door. According to the team, the new system reduces the amount of time the robot must explore the property and eliminates the need to map specific residences.
