A water treatment system able to pull specified toxins from the water would save both money and energy compared to current systems.
Developed by a team from Rice University, the system relies on a set of charged, porous electrodes that will extract specific ions from the water. The toxins can be removed from the pores when they are full, allowing the electrode to be used again.
According to professor Quilin Li, “Traditional methods to remove everything, such as reverse osmosis, are expensive and energy intensive. If we figure out a way to just fish out these minor components, we can save a lot of energy.”
