WaveSense Lets Cars See Under the Road

WaveSense Lets Cars See Under the Road
Sep-07-18
The innovative WaveSense technology keeps self-driving cars stable by letting them see beneath the road.

While autonomous car technology continues to improve, it can be stymied by some challenges—such as when road markings are obscured by snow or fog. To give self-driving cars a better sense of location, the WaveSense ground-penetrating radar (GPR) “will scan up to ten feet below the surface of the road in order to lock onto stable ground.” That information is used along with data collected by the car’s onboard sensors to build a map of the unique underground geological patterns that can provide a guide when surface elements can't be detected.
