A flexible wireless oxygen sensor able to monitor infants remotely could let the child leave the hospital sooner and reduce parent stress.
The small, wearable sensor developed by a team from Worcester Polytechnic Institute is the size of a band-aid, and can be safely stuck to the infant’s skin. Once in the place, the prototype device will monitor blood oxygen levels and transmit the data wirelessly via the internet, allowing doctors to keep an eye on the baby’s vital signs. The wireless system not only makes it easier for parents to hold their child, but could also allow the baby to go home sooner—reducing both the cost and stress to parents.
