Wearable Patch Monitors Exercise Efficiency

Wearable Patch Monitors Exercise Efficiency
Nov-29-16
A stick-on patch able to analyze sweat to determine exercise efficiency can also warn users if they are putting themselves in danger.

Developed by a team from Northwestern University in Illinois, the small, flexible patch is meant to worn on the forearm or back, where it will analyze the wearer’s biofluids. The patch is equipped with four reservoirs coated with a reagent that will change color when exposed to a particular chemical—glucose, lactate, chloride and hydrogen ions (which indicate pH). The data is then analyzed by a companion app, which uses the smartphone’s camera to take a photo of the patch and translate the colors into concentrations.
