Being touted as the first virtual musical instrument for flexible phones, the WhammyPhone can be played by bending, twisting and squeezing.
Created by Queen's University’s Human Media Lab, the prototype WhammyPhone is made up of a Flexible Organic Light Emitting Diode (FOLED) touchscreen display equipped with a bend sensor. A computer connected wirelessly to the phone generates the sounds, which are triggered by flexing the phone in a number of ways.
The WhammyPhone can be programmed to "play" virtual instruments such as the guitar and violin, and offers a kinesthetic feedback that, according to Dr. Roel Vertegaal, "… allows for the kind of expressive input normally only seen in traditional musical instruments."
