WiFox Software Directs Data Traffic

WiFox Software Directs Data Traffic
Dec-04-12
The WiFox software speeds up public Wi-Fi hotspots by monitoring traffic and rerouting it to eliminate backlogs, potentially improving throughput by up to 700 percent.

Developed by a team at North Carolina State University, WiFox monitors the traffic on a particular Wi-Fi channel, granting that channel access point priority when it senses a backlog building. The amount of priority depends on the backlog size, with longer backups demanding higher priority. The developers compare the software to a traffic cop, “keeping the data traffic moving smoothly in both directions.”

In test on the lab Wi-Fi system, improved data input ranged from 200 percent with 25 users to 700 percent with 45 users. The software can be packaged as an update and used in existing Wi-Fi networks, making it easy to incorporate without needing to change the entire system.
