An innovative new wood-based graphene from Rice University could help keep electronic waste from landfills.
The wood-based graphene was created using an industrial laser to blacken a pattern on a block of pine in a technique called laser-induced graphene. Previously tested only on polyimide plastic, the new pine laser-induced graphene is created in an oxygen-free atmosphere, which prevents the pine from burning and instead produces a surface of graphene foam.
The Rice team hopes to use to pine laser-induced graphene to create eco-friendly supercapacitors.
