World's First PET Aerogel

World's First PET Aerogel
Nov-02-18
A new method of creating aerogels from plastic bottles could save money while reducing waste.

Developed by a team from the National University of Singapore, the process relies on rendering the PET commonly used in plastic bottles into fibers that are coated with silica. Those fibers are then treated so that they expand and then dry out to form a durable, porous aerogel that can be coated with various compounds to perform different functions, such as absorbing oil, acting as a thermal insulator, or as a fire retardant in firefighter jackets.
