A 3D-printed liquid biopsy device able to capture and isolate circulating tumor cells could speed cancer diagnosis and offer insight into bespoke treatments.

The device, developed by a team from Georgia Tech, is simple to use and requires only a small sample of blood. Rather than seeking out specific cells, the system relies on 3D-printed, zig-zagging channels and ‘traps’ lined with antigens that increase the chances of a white blood cell coming in contact with one of the walls. Once the white blood cells have been captured, the remaining red blood cells are passed through a commercial filter, trapping the tumor cells for analysis.
