High efficiency power converter, and modulator and transmitter using it

The invention refers to a Digital to Analog converter able to manage a flow of forward and reverse energy, from source and load, through the control of two PWM (Pulse Width Modulator). This technique allows obtaining high efficiency as well as the fast dynamic of signals (about 30 kHz) up to zero voltage.
The bidirectional flow of energy is controlled with an innovative algorithm that can be implemented with a dedicated HW logic.
Technology benefits:
• Energy recovery from the output through step-up.
• Circuit (step-down + step-up) enabling high efficiency both in the energy transfer from the source (VCC) to the load (VOUT) and vice versa.
• Use of a negative voltage source (VDD) which permits to follow faster dynamics by mean of speeding the discharge of L1 and C1.
• Possibility to insert a random (in the controller logic) jitter in order to “spread” in frequency possible spurious signals in transmission.
• Possibility to manage high power and high band
• Capability to generate any wave forms at high efficiency.
• Controlling algorithm, based on a physical model, very simple and accurate, capable to be implemented in programmable logic; the algorithm allows to have the desired output voltage exactly as it happens in an usual digital-to-analog converter, where at a given digital value in input corresponds an output voltage.
Uniqueness: The traditional approach provides the implementation of a I-Q (Cartesian) modulator on the exciter followed by RF amplifiers (A class, low efficiency).
The new proposed approach is based on the polar modulation technique (Envelope Elimination and Restoration) consisting in:
1. A phase modular implemented at exciter level
2. An amplitude modulator providing the appropriate voltage to the final stage of the power amplifier chain, implemented with the controlling algorithm subject of the patent
3. An RF amplifier chain, consisting of power amplifiers in saturated class (D class for wideband application or E class for narrow band application) in order to obtain high RF efficiency
Applications: Robotics and automation, mainly in the control of actuators and of motors, are the natural applications of the technology; the high efficiency make the power converter suitable for autonomous robots where it is needed a low power consumptions.
Automotive applications in full-electric or hybrid vehicles
Induction owens
Cellular base stations
High frequency RF power generation

The technology is ready to allow the development of silicon chip where to integrate the controlling algorithm, the drivers and the power MOSFETs; therefore it will be possible to have a general purpose power DAC, something that it doesn't exist.
