Methods for reducing the incidence of mastitis by administration of keratin

Disclosed are methods of reducing the incidence of mastitis, inducing leucycytosis and of sealing a teat canal of a non-human animal such as a cow, including the step of introducing a composition including keratin into the teat canal of the animal, thereby reducing the incidence of mastitis in said animal. Also disclosed is a teat seal including keratin formulated for introduction into the teat canal of a non-human animal, wherein the composition is a solid or semi-solid.
