Process for the Oxidative Cleavage of the Ethylenic Double Bonds of Vinylaromatics

The invention relates to a process for the oxidative cleavage of vinylaromatics of the formula (1), with the characteristic feature that compounds of the formula (1) are oxidized in accordance with the reaction scheme below to aldehydes or ketones of the formulae (2) and (3) in the presence of molecular oxygen and with at least one of haemin b ("haemin"), chloro(dibromodiphenylprotoporphyrinato)iron(III) ("haemin 1"), chloro[tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)- protoporphyrinato]iron(III) ("haemin 2"), chloro[tetrakis(4-sulphophenyl)protoporphyrinato]iron(III) ("haemin 3") and chloro[tetrakis(4-trimethylammoniophenyl)protoporphyrinato]iron(III) tetrachloride ("haemin 4") as catalyst, in which formulae n is an integer from 0 to 5; the radicals R1 are selected from saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon groups having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, amino, C1-6-alkylamino and C1-6-dialkylamino groups, halogens, hydroxyl and cyano, it being possible for two of the substituents R1 to be joined to form a ring; R2 and R3 each independently of one another are hydrogen or one of the options for R1, it being possible for R2 and/or R3 to be joined with one R1 to form a ring, in which case R2 and R3 may each be a chemical bond.
