Novel Chemotherapeutic Agents for Treating Cancer

The compounds of formula (I) where: R1, R2, R3 and R4 are independently H, or a radical selected from hydroxyl; -OR; and -OCOR; where R is a radical selected from (C1-C4)-alkyl, phenyl, -(CH2)n-phenyl with n =1 - 4, and a radical derived from the above-mentioned with benzene rings, by means of a mono-, di- or tri-substitution in the benzene rings thereof; the substitutes being a radical selected from halogen, (C1-C4)-alkyl, (C1-C4) alkoxyl and trifluoromethyl, R4 also includes halogen, and R1, R2 and R3 also include O; the broken line is a single or double bond, with the condition that: a) when the broken line is a simple or double bond, then R1, R2 and R3 have the above-mentioned meaning except for O, and b) when the broken line is a double bond, then R1, R2 and R3 are independently O, have proven to be active against a number of cancer cell lines, in particular against leukaemia.
