Method for Reducing the Concentration of Ammonium in Excrement on Cattle Farms

The invention relates to solid particles having a size of less than 500 [mu]m and containing Mg and P in a molar ratio of between 75:1 and 1:1, which can be obtained using a method in which: (a) natural magnesite or natural dolomite is calcined at a temperature of between 600 DEG C and 1000 DEG C for the length of time required in order for the magnesium carbonate to decompose completely; (b) the product obtained in step (a) is reacted with phosphoric acid and, optionally, between 15 wt.-% and 500 wt.-% water is added in relation to the product obtained in step (a); (c) optionally, the product from step (b) is dried; and (d) if necessary, the particle size is reduced to an approximate size of less than 500 [mu]m. Said particles can be used to reduce the ammonium concentration in excrement on cattle farms (e.g. purines), which, once treated, can be used subsequently as fertilisers.
