Surface Patterning

Surface Patterning – Simultaneous functionalization and patterning of surfaces by scribing or scoring in the presence of reactive species. This technique has been done on silicon wafers using a diamond tipped pencil but it can be used on other materials using other scribes.

General Information

For many materials, the act of abrading, scratching, or scribing will produce highly reactive surface species. If material is scored in the presence of a reactive chemical, a reaction between an activated surface and a reactive molecule may take place. In this manner a surface can be simultaneously patterned and functionalized. Miniature corrals, which consist of hydrophobic lines, can be produced that hold droplets of water. Using such enclosures it is possible to selectively functionalize regions of surfaces.
