Methods for treating cancer by inhibiting mitosis using pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidines

A compound having the following formula: wherein X is selected from the group consisting of a C1 to C6 alkyl group, a heteroalkyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, a substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl group, an arylalkyl group, and a heteroarylalkyl group; wherein R 1 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, a C1 to C6 alkyl group, a heteroalkyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, a substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl group, an arylalkyl group, and a heteroalkyl group; wherein R 2 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, a C1 to C6 alkyl group, a plurality of C1 to C6 alkyl groups, a heteroalkyl group, a plurality of heteroalkyl groups, an alkoxy group, a plurality of alkoxy groups, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, a plurality of substituted or unsubstituted aryl groups, a substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl group, and a plurality of substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl groups; wherein R 3 is selected from the group consisting of zero, a C1 to C6 alkyl group, a heteroalkyl group, an alkenyl group, and a heteroalkenyl group; and wherein R 4 is selected from the group consisting of a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, a substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl group, an arylalkyl group, a heteroarylalkyl group, and hydrogen, and R 4 is hydrogen when R 3 is zero, for use in a method of treating cancer by inhibiting mitosis, wherein said cancer is optionally one selected from: melanoma, leukemia, colon cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer, renal cancer, breast cancer, brain cancer, and Kaposi's sarcoma cancer.
