Human Leukocyte Antigen Alleles Associated with Advanced Lung Diseases

The present invention relates to methods and compositions that may be used to predict the risk of an individual, for example a smoker, for developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ("COPD"), emphysema or idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis ("IPF"). The invention particularly relates to methods of evaluating the risk of an individual developing COPD or IPF comprising the detection of one or more of the Cw*07, Cw*0702, HLA-B*07, HLA-B*0702, HLA-A*03, DRB 1 * 1501, DQB 1 *0602, Cw*05, Cw*08, or Cw* 12 HLA alleles.
