The method involves testing unidirectionally reinforced fiber composite material. Lamb-waves in the fiber composite material are excited and measured. Viscoelastic material characteristics of the fiber composite material are determined. A real part and/or an imaginary part of elasticity coefficients is determined as the material characteristics of the fiber composite material by a module integrated in an evaluation unit. Dispersion characteristics are determined for one or more directions with respect to fiber orientation of the fiber composite material. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for detecting defects and/or damage in unidirectionally reinforced fiber composite material (2) a device for determining a structural condition of unidirectionally reinforced fiber composite material and for detecting defects and/or damage in unidirectionally reinforced fiber composite material, comprising a transmitter.
