This invention provides methods and reagents for promoting neurogenesis, by modulating neural stem cell proliferation and differentiation. Particularly, this invention provides methods and reagents for promoting neurogenesis in a patient's central nervous system where the patient suffers from an aging-related neurodegenerative disease. Specifically, the invention provides methods for promoting neurogenesis comprising modulating the a and/or ?-secretase activities.
