The method involves providing emulsions in an aqueous, non-aqueous, water immiscible phase. Mineral oil, grease, hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon derivative are provided in the non-aqueous phase. Alginit or artificial alginit is used as a fixed bed for separation of the emulsions. The alginit or artificial alginit is directly added to the emulsions for separation of the emulsions. The alginit is directly used in a natural and unprocessed form in batch and continuous processes.
