A process for lycopene production by photosynthetic bacteria

Lycopene is a potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti cancer molecule. It is also helpful for treating a number of conditions like Coronary heart disease, stroke, reduce the risk of cervical, colon, esophageal, rectal, prostate, and stomach cancers, for treating oral submucous fibrosis, gingivitis, age-related macular degeneration, Lycopene also reduce or prevent the side effects, caused by antibiotics. There is great demand exist for lycopene to its beneficial effect. The present invention provides a process for extracting, purifying the substantially pure lycopene from a novel photosynthetic bacterium by simple steps with high purity, which is considered to be suitable for mass production in an industrial scale. Also disclosed a novel medium to generate high biomass containing, higher carotenogenesis in particular with Lycopene. The purified lycopene is free from chemical impurities and other carotenoids from selected said microorganisms. The purified lycopene serve as safe source, which can be safely used in pharmaceuticals, neutraceuticals, and animal feed additives, as well as colorants in cosmetics and in foods. Because of its high purity (99.98%), it can be used as an analytical standard. The purified lycopene is a fine crystalline powder with low residual solvents.
