Display System Implementing View Switch Panel Based on Reflective Polarizer and Liquid Crystal

Having a laptop computer working both as a tablet and as a normal laptop faces challenge of how to respectively orientate its display. When working as a tablet, display of laptop computer has to be swung 180 degree from folded position to face up position. Drawback of working such way is to leave keyboard side open for no use and it looks and feels awkward. A variety of approaches have been attempted by commercials to alleviate the problem, but none prevailing. The invention of this patent provides a feasible root-solving approach by making the display convertible for viewing from either side. The claimed invention of this application combines a liquid crystal polarization steering layer with a reflective polarizer layer to form a view switch panel. When the light passing through the polarization steering layer is polarization steered to go through the reflective polarizer layer, the view switch panel lets the pass-through light go forward. When the light passing through the polarization steering layer is polarization steered to reflect back off the reflective polarizer layer, the view switch panel reverses the pass-through light to go backward. The polarization steer layer is controllable to achieve the desired polarization steering effect by varying the voltage applied thereupon. Thus, by controlling the voltage applied thereupon, the view switch panel can either allow the pass-through light to go through or reflect the pass-through light to go backward. Having the view switch panel placed in front of a flat panel display that is made transparent itself, it would make the display assembly convertible for viewing from either side. Such dual view convertible display in conjunction with a touch panel on one side would work as a touch display one the side and a normal display on the other side. Such capability may be desired for a laptop computer that works both as a tablet when its display is folded and as a normal laptop when its display is unfolded. The capability may be also desired for a smart phone that can be used as a touch phone when folded or a phone with keyboard when unfolded. The view switch panel works homogeneously, not pixelized, thus cheap to make. Furthermore, its fabrication can be seamlessly integrated with manufacturing process of the flat panel display, which makes it ideal for mass production.

Potential Applications:
. Dual view display that switches viewing between two sides of display
. Laptop computer working as a tablet when folded and as a normal laptop when unfolded.
. Smart phone used as a touch phone when folded and as a phone with keyboard when unfolded.
