Differential Diagnosis of Oral Pathologies

Background: A wide range of oral pathologies have very similar or identical clinical appearance, such as leukoplakia or erythroplakia. Yet, the prognosis and treatment are completely different. Under current clinical practice, these lesions require biopsy for diagnosis and monitoring, often at 6 month intervals. Biopsies, especially multiple biopsies repeated at regular intervals in the mouth and throat often adversely affect functions such as speech and eating, as well as being very disfiguring. Technology: By analyzing certain specific characteristics of these and other oral pathologies, the University has developed a novel approach that provides non-invasive diagnosis and monitoring of the pathologies, thus avoiding the need for traumatic surgical biopsies, while allowing for earlier detection and optimization of treatments.
