Novel, Stand-alone, Closed Ventilating Circle Circuit with CO2 Absorption and Sensitive Spirometry Measures Pulmonary O2 Uptake During Anesthesia

Background: The volume of O2 consumption (VO2) and the volume of CO2 production (VCO2) can give vital information about a patient under anesthesia. For example, monitoring VO2 can detect non-steady state critical events and changes in tissue metabolism in anesthetized patients. However, no accurate calibrating measurement of VO2 is available during anesthesia. Technology: University of California, Irvine researchers have developed a novel, closed circle, ventilating circuit which can be a calibrating standard for VO2 measurement during anesthesia, particularly VO2 per breath. This stand-alone circuit facilitates normal mechanical ventilation, absence of physiological gas leaks, complete CO2 absorption, and the ability to measure small changes (1 ml) in circuit end-expired volume via the valve and precision spirometer.
