ThirdEye – early detection of cerebral palsy (CP)

DOMAIN An early and accurate detection of cerebral palsy (CP) enables correct treatment at an early age to the infant at risk. Today’s methods for detecting CP are unable to establish a diagnosis until late in the first year of life, in some cases even later. Experts are currently doing analysis of infant spontaneous movements at 4 months of age. Opportunities exist for early and better diagnostic procedures.

DESCRIPTION NTNU research scientists are developing a novel computer-based tool for recording and assessing spontaneous infant movement in a clinical setting. The tool, called ThirdEYE, enables the clinician to make a more objective, accurate and early detection of CP.

ThirdEYE is a portable suitcase-like unit containing a video camera, a ground sheet for the infant and a laptop. By using the state-of-the-art measurement and data analysis technology, ThirdEYE extracts, analyzes and classifies infant movements.

ThirdEYE is an innovation that will significantly influence the assessment, follow-up and therapeutic intervention of infants at risk for CP and possible other related diseases such as attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

UNIQUE SELLING POINTS • Detection of CP at a early stage (4 months of age)
• Objective analysis as a basis for correct therapeutic intervention
• Portability
• Convenience and ease of use for researchers interested in infant motion

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS • Detection of CP
• Detection of other related diseases such as attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

STATE OF DEVELOPMENT Previous data models distinguishing normal and abnormal movements in 70 infants have been verified. Our NTNU research group is integrating and designing the ThirdEYE diagnostic equipment prototype containing the necessary elements. Clinical studies at. St. Olavs Hospital are starting in 2007.
