Medical Spectroscopy

DOMAIN Aging of injuries on a victim’s body is an important aspect of forensic medicine. Currently, visual assessment and colorimetry based on empirical criteria are the most common techniques for this task, although the results are uncertain. The aim of this study was to develop a mathematical model to describe blood diffusion within bruised skin, and to use this method to retrieve the age of a bruise from measured skin reflectance.

DESCRIPTION NTNU researchers have developed a new method for determining the age of bruises. The time development of a skin hematoma is described with good accuracy by the implemented model. The analytic method provides a theoretical basis for developing an apparatus to determine the age of injuries in forensic medicine. Preliminary results show that measured and simulated skin reflectance agrees well. The model predicts the age of a hematoma with an accuracy of approximately 1 day

UNIQUE SELLING POINTS
• Objective method to determine the age of a skin bruise
• More accurate than conventional colorimetry measures:
• +/- 3 hrs within the first 24 hrs
• +/- 12 hrs within the first 10 days (may be extended)
• Hyper spectral imaging will give additional information
• Device that made the bruise
• Type of impact

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS
• Forensic Medicine
• Post-mortem examination; discover invisible injuries and estimate time of injury more precisely.
• Abused children and women; victim might be unable to talk (small children), unwilling to talk or are in shock.
• Rape; is the victim telling the truth?
• Intensive Care Units and Plastic surgeons
• Discover and monitor subcutaneous post-operative bleedings, e.g. after a cardiac operation.

STATE OF DEVELOPMENT
• Find a licence partner and create a good cooperation
• Technology needs:
• More experiments
• Design and develop a prototype
