Environment to Environment Connection

Background: Most common communication involves interaction directly from a person to another person. When technology started mediating communication, devices started playing a more important role and much device to device (D2D) communication was introduced. For example, a telephone, land or mobile, is connected to another telephone. In video conferencing, a camera is connected to a display. The inherent problem, is that traditional forms of communication limit the experience of communicating with another person, be it for business or pleasure. Technology: University researchers have developed a capability for Environment to Environment (E2E) connectivity that can be achieved by placing multiple heterogeneous sensors (cameras, microphones, infrared, etc.) in an environment to detect appropriate objects and events continuously thus creating a dynamic Situation Model (SM) of the environment. This SM can be used to provide adequate symbolic as well as sensory (experiential) information to users in other environments. By creating a similar SM for the other environments, a joint SM can be prepared that can help in presenting appropriate information in both environments at adequate locations. This will make interactions among people in different locations much more natural because unlike current device-to-device models, people will be free and natural in their environment and will be able to interact with remote environments as if they are at the same place. Application: Business and personal communication systems.
