Edible Anti-Adhesion Material for the Treatment of Oral Bacterial
The Invention A high-molecular-weight, non dialyzable material (NDM) isolated from Cranberry juice, specifically inhibits adhesion and dissociates co-aggregates of oral bacteria. NDM act preferably on co-aggregates that include Gram-negative anaerobes and inhibit, in-vitro, biofilm formation by mutans streptococci. In a clinical study, salivary mutans streptococci count, as well as total bacterial count, was significantly reduced by NDM containing mouthwash as compared to control group using placebo mouthwash. NDM can thus serve to improve oral hygiene.
The Need A microbial accumulation on tooth surfaces is one of the major factors leading to dental plaque and caries. Microorganisms that progressively accumulate, co-aggregate and subsequently adhere to each other in the gingival crevice area are believed to play a central role in the initiation and progression of periodontal diseases.
Potential Applications NDM interrupts microbial adhesion and aggregation. It may constitute an integral part of a toothpaste, dental cream or gel, tooth powder, or mouthwash and can be applied during the regular oral hygiene practice. It may also be formulated as a “stand alone” treatment and applied separately before, after, and/or in between regular brushing times Advantages NDM represents a new approach for the treatment of oral bacteria:
o It has significantly reduced mutans streptococci and total bacterial count in a clinical study
o It is edible
o It is not bactericidal and therefore selection for resistant strains is not anticipated
