Optimum Wireless Communication through Unknown Obscuring Environment Using Time-Reversal Principle

Introduction Wireless communications are often hampered by surrounding environments such as buildings, geographic terrain, trees, and other objects. Conventional techniques analyze the communication characteristics in a complex medium by assuming several models for the environment and calculating the effects of the environment on wireless communications. This technique is not effective when the environment is largely unknown as is the case for most urban areas or battlefields. Technology description Researchers at the UW have developed a systematic method to optimize wireless communication in unknown environments, based on recently developed timereverse principles. Business opportunity Applications for this technology include wireless communication in complex terrain areas like cities, where the transmitter or the receiver may be a base station and the other a mobile unit. This system can also be used in a battlefield situation where both transmitters and receivers are located in a hidden place or behind other objects. Stage of development Initial data and working prototypes exist for this technology. Intellectual property position This technology is available for licensing. The UW is currently reviewing this technology for worldwide patent protection.
