Programmable Ultrasound Back-End System Using Multi-Core Processor

Introduction Ultrasonography is a noninvasive medical imaging technique, which utilizes ultrasonic waves to visualize soft tissue within the body, and advances in this technology have led to various therapies, including those that utilize high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU)
capable of rapidly heating small areas of tissue deep within the body. Ultrasound offers a real-time, inexpensive, and noninvasive alternative to complex imaging techniques and to some surgeries. Unfortunately, ultrasound techniques can require significant computational power and is often restricted to hardwired architectures. Technology Description Professor Kim and others at the University of Washington have developed an ultrasound imaging system in which all of the signal and image processing is performed using a high-performance multi-core processor. The system supports all basic and advanced modes, including 3D imaging and elastography, and it allows the flexibility of adding new modes and modifying existing algorithms. Business Opportunity Easily modified architectures for ultrasound devices present opportunities for the expansion and advancement of ultrasound imaging and other techniques. The advantages of this system over conventional systems include lower development costs, reduced timeto- market, scalability, flexibility, and the ability to make field upgrades. Stage of Development A working methodology for this technology has been developed. Intellectual Property Position The UW is currently reviewing this technology for worldwide patent protection.
