Introduction The accurate and precise sorting and deposition of nano/bio materials within a nano- or micro-environment is critical for the functionality of devices such as biochips. Fluid flow in a microchannel is one method of controlling long-range transport and electric fields may be employed to control short-range positioning of nano/bio materials. Technology description Researchers at the University of Washington have developed an alignment and sorting method of nano/bio materials using fluid flow-assisted dielectrophoresis combined with laminar flow in microfluidic channel. The method improves the yield of the assembly process and achieves controlled deposition of nano/bio materials upon their length. Long range transport is facilitated by fluid flow and short range positioning is facilitated by an electric field. Business opportunity This invention dramatically improves the yield of assembly of nanowire/DNA molecules across opposing electrodes, while achieving selective placement of the materials. This technology is widely applicable in nanoelectronics, biochip applications, and nanolithography. Stage of development A working model and performance data have been obtained. Intellectual property position The technology is available for licensing. The UW is currently reviewing this technology for worldwide patent protection.
