Embedded Haptics in Cell Phone Dialing

Introduction Handheld devices such as cellphones and PDAs have been increasing in complexity over the last few years. These devices can now handle large amounts of data, but the avenues for inputting data are severely limited. A more flexible channel for entering data into handheld devices would allow users to take advantage of their expanding capabilities. Technology description This invention describes a new user interface for small handheld devices that relies on the sense of touch (haptics) to input and receive information. This would allow the user to interact with the device without the need for a keypad, thus freeing much-needed space on the device. Business opportunity Preliminary studies on the feasibility of this idea have been done, and research in this area is ongoing at this time. Intellectual property position The UW has a pending patent on this technology.
