Microscale Electromagnetic Device

Summary This invention concerns devices and methodology to control the positioning and movement of magnetic and non-magnetic nanoparticles in a fluid with nanometer precision. The devices allow for the independent and simultaneous control of many particles. The devices utilize a grid of current carrying wires or an array of charged posts to create isolated and continuously moveable magnetic field maxima or electic field maxima, respectively, which trap and hold the particles. The devices have many applications. Individual particles can be isolated and studied. They can be used in the fabrication or assembly of nanoscale devices from nanoparticles and nanowires. Cells and biomolecules linked to magnetic nanoparticles can be manipulated for research and discovery purposes. The invention could be the basis for a new dedicated positioning instruments, an accessory for microscopes, or machines for fabricating nanostructures.

Applications controlling particles' positioning, nanofabrication, study of biomolecules or cells. For Further Information Please Contact the Director of Business Development Daniel Behr Email: [email protected] Telephone: (617) 495-3067
