Novel Polarimetry Scheme to Monitor Phase-polarization Characteristics of Light Under Surface Plasmon Resonance Biosensing

Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) sensor technology has been commercialized rapidly as a tool for bimolecular interaction analysis, drug discovery and life science research. However, phase detecting technology has not been utilized in commercial produc ts although it offers higher sensitivity. One of the reasons being, the non-linear relation between phase and refractive index change on the sensor surface, which may lead to a difficult calibration in bio-sensing applications.

In this invention, a SPR sensor with simultaneous detection of polarization and phase has been presented. The advantage of this system is that it can detect a very small change of refractive index in 3rd harmonic signal accomplished with a large dynamic range in 2nd harmonic signal
