Synthesis and Processing of degradable Fluorocarbon End-Capped Polymers and their uses as Biomaterials

Tracheal epithelial cells were earlier cultured in vitro to yield a model that near-perfectly replicates naturally epithelialized tracheal lumen vide technology no. 5413. This technology describes the synthesis of bio-degradable polymers and study of degradation processes to replant tracheal epithelial tissue in real and for use in drug delivery systems. This new series of surface modified biodegradable polyester polymers allow a small presence of a fluorocarbon surface modifier whose chemistry (wet-ability, biologically specific adhesion, scaffolding degradation kinetics and drug delivery kinetics) control the properties of such materials. Changing the surface structure allows controlling over initial releases of acid degradation products. The values include:

1)Different and controllable rates of degradation for drug or protein delivery. 2)Slower or faster initial drug or protein delivery rates which can be controlled by sample compositions, surface chemistry and morphology / pre paration. 3)Designed surface chemistry for biologically specific adhesion. 4)It a single and cost effective process.

The invention targets the market of controlled drug delivery systems, i.e., effective therapies that eliminate the threat of und er- and overdosing, maintaining drug levels within desired ranges, etc. A paradigm of fewer administrations, optimal use of the drug in question, and increased patient compliance is sought. The device can be used to release proteins and other biologi cal entities and assist in the treatment (re-epithelialization) of injuries (tracheal, skin, cornea, intestine, etc.).
