MUC7 20-mer Peptide: Novel and Promising Antifungal and Antibacterial Therapeutic Agent

This invention encompasses peptide derivatives of a naturally occurring protein found within the human body. These peptides have been shown to posses potent antifungal and antibacterial activity comparable to that of currently used antimicrobial age nts. The microbes used within those studies include but are not limited to both resistant and non-resistant strains of C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. neoformans, S. mutans, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa. Preliminary data demonstrates that these peptides possess broad spectrum antibacterial and antifungal activity even against drug resistant strains; fast acting cidal activity which is not temperature dependent; and they are virtually non-toxic to human cells.

The potential applications for this technology are broad:

* Therapeutic agent for the treatment of bacterial and/or fungal infections (drug resistant and non-drug resistant)
* Component of artificial saliva for immunocompromised patients and/or those suffering from saliva ry dysfunction
* Topical antimicrobial
* Oral rinse
* Disinfectant/antiseptic for use in food or surface preparation
* Preservative to control food spoilage
