Bacteriophage Genes as the Basis for New Antibiotics

Discovery of wide-spectrum bacteriocidal proteins creates new opportunities for (a) improving phage therapy and (b) identifying important bacterial drug targets and developing new antibiotics. These bacteriocidal proteins are of interest due to the fact that the bacterial cells do not lyse (burst) upon dying, a factor which makes their use against strains that harbor endotoxins much safer for the infected patient.
