Electronic Learning Community

The Johns Hopkins Electronic Learning Community (ELC) is a web-based community portal designed to provide groups of professionals with tightly integrated tools for communication and collaboration. The ELC offers a secure environment for schools, organizations, businesses, project teams, etc, to disseminate information, participate in online threaded discussions, share calendars, hold online meetings (or classes), and instant messages to colleagues. The ELC also provides convenient tools for file sharing among members and for developing a shared repository of files and web links relevant to the group?s work. Developed in 2000 for the educational community, the ELC has served more than 10,000 professionals across 50 schools, organizations, and associations. Description (Set) Proposed Use (Set) The ELC offers an "out of the box" groupware solution that allows organizations to communicate and share resources via a customizable, interactive web site. Any group that could benefit from such online capacities may be a potential licensee of the technology. Organizations that have students/members/employees dispersed geographically could particularly benefit. The ELC was by educators, for educators, so the academic community is a primary market. But the tools included within the ELC are applicable to any industry where online communication and resource sharing is beneficial. The ELC has been used by JHU as a platform for distance learning, so schools and universities with both fully and partially-online classes are a key market. For academic institutions/groups that require portfolios to be developed, licensing the ELC along with the JHU Electronic Portfolio (EP) could be of significant interest.
