A Method for Designing Non-Linear Field Reflectrons

This is an approach to the design of reflectron time-of-flight mass analyzers that utilizes a cylindrical geometry to achieve nearly-quadratic retarding and reflecting fields without employing a set of resistively-coupled lenses. The mass analyzer consists of a simple grounded cylinder capped with a high voltage retarding electrode, and is thus known as an ?endcap reflectron?. The intent is to provide high resolution focusing in a miniaturized instrument. Description (Set) Proposed Use (Set) Diagnostics, field portable instrumentation, homeland security, environmental monitoring, bioagent and chemical agent detectin, airport security, etc.
