A Bench-top Image Guided Conformal Irradiation System for Laboratory Animals

The present technology is a bench top small animal research platform designed for focused delivery of radiation to laboratory animals. The system is equipped with CT image guidance and a robotic stage for positioning of the animal. High quality CT reconstructions are possible with the prototype. The novel acquisition geometry enables the employment of a single x-ray source for both imaging and radiation delivery. Current systems on the market do not have guidance capabilities or utilize a CT gantry platform. Additionally, the system comes with planning capabilities that are not currently available for animal research. Currently, the irradiation treatments delivered to laboratory animals differ from the precise treatment methods used for human cancer radiation. Typically, animals are subjected to uniform radiation dose distributions whereas human treatment methods are highly non-uniform. Given the significance of animal research in advancing cancer research and treatment, there is a strong desire to bridge the growing gap between animal and human radiation research. Description (Set) Proposed Use (Set) This technology is primarily designed to be a laboratory resource for research institutions. The size of the prototype allows for the system to be available for a single laboratory or as a resource for a group of laboratories.
