Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) Dosimeter for RF Power Deposition in MRI

The present invention addresses the critical need for direct and independent SAR by providing the first dosimeter for MRI which directly measures standard average head and body SAR. The device uses a transducer placed in the scanner, comprised of induction looping a resistive load and a small MRI set-up sample. The voltages induced in the loops are measured and calibrated to provide direct measures of the average SAR, independent of the scanner Devices that are tested to be safe at a specified scanner SAR level cannot be trusted if the specified SAR level is not reliable. Description (Set) Proposed Use (Set) The scanner automatically sets the flip-angle based on MRI signal and load, the dosimeter probe: 1. provides the load equivalent to the scanner of one standard torso or head; and; 2. contains a signal-generating sample. Since a physical model of a standard torso is too large and heavy to be practical, and is unnecessary for average SAR measures, we will use a pair of orthogonal conducting loops. The invention can also provide standardized machine-independent measurements of average SAR. Peak local values through a model. Patent (Set) 60/967,919 filed 07-Sep-2007
